A few light words
Nothing beats the ambiance of a room lit solely by candlelight. But oof, most scented candles give me painful headaches1. This led me down the rabbit hole of phthalates, hormone disruption2, VOCs, toluene3 — oh my! And not to mention all the packaging waste that tends to come with a household candle collection. I’ve repurposed as many as containers as possible, but more often than not, most ended up in the bin.
Enter Light Provisions! It was their Misc. Recycled Wax Candles that initially won me over in 2018 at a local pop-up market. And they’ve been my go-to candles ever since!
About Light Provisions
They are a small batch, hand-poured by humans candle company located in Colorado Springs. Their fragrances are meticulously selected and blended in-house, so each candle scent truly tells its own distinctive story. Every detail of their business — from the ingredients, to the packaging, to an accompanied newsletter playlist is done with intention and sustainability in mind.
Ingredients
Only American-harvested soy wax and food-grade paraffin wax are used in all Light Provisions candles. The wicks are composed of woven cotton and paper, primed in vegetable wax, and always lead-free. And their fragrances (swoon!) are blends of phthalate-free perfume oils and essential oils.
Vessels
Their crystal candle vessels are a thing a beautiful and were designed to be repurposed after use. “Sculpted from lead-free crystal and designed to outlive your candle's final flicker. Once purged of wax and cleaned, their in-house designed bespoke tumblers are ready reuse—cocktails, wine, mock-tails, cold brew, plant holder, bathroom vanity water glass, toothbrush or cotton ball holder…” These tumblrs are beyond stunning and the weight feels so good in your hand.
Their Traveler Tin candles my go-to gift for friends — not just for the scent but for the endless upcycling storage possibilities. “Forged from a single sheet of stamped tin, and what we might call champions of sustainability. With a passport for infinite recycling, they make their round trips without a trace of virgin materials or the carbon-heavy baggage that comes from mining and processing fresh material.”
Packaging
Every detail of their shipping and packaging is on point:
- Recycled and recyclable boxes
- Biodegradable and compostable corn starch packing peanuts and pads.
- 100% recycled and recyclable kraft void paper.
-100% post-consumer recycled paper air cushions that are recyclable, compostable, and feature a potato starch based adhesive.
- 50% post-consumer recycled bubble wrap and/or bubble wrap that is reused from previous shipments (we try not to purchase brand new bubble wrap unless it is made from recycled materials).
-On average, at least 50% of our void fill packaging (peanuts, bubblewrap, etc) is recycled from orders placed with our suppliers. If you place multiple orders with us, the void packaging is often different. Consistent? Not really. Earth friendly? Absolutely.
1% For The Planet
Light Provisions recently joined the worldwide organization 1% For The Planet, I mean! They’ve made the commitment to donate at least 1% of their net profits to vetted environmental nonprofits within the 1% FTP network. Each year they different roster of nonprofits to support.
